Agenda 2016
The design of the agenda for 2016 is based on the weatherconditions - the average amount of sunshine, rain, wind and length of the days in a week - of the previous leap-year, which results in a changing background-pattern every week.
And, it is actually for sale so if you are still looking for an agenda for this year; don't look any further! A copy of the agenda costs €15,- and you can buy it via blurb.__

CAT is a publication I made in collaboration with Dominiek Kampman and was an assignment we had to for an external company (IABR) as part of our graduation. CAT explores the possibilities of Carbon Added Tax instead of Value Added Tax. In this publication we decided track the amount CO2 that was needed for the total production of this publication. The grid on which the publication is designed, is based on a hexagonal pattern.
In order to make the reader aware of the amount of CO2 that's used while making this publication we devided the publication in sections with a wrapped page around it, so the reader has to rip apart the 'wrapping' before he or she can start reading. Each wrapping also has table of the products we used during the design process and the amount of CO2 they contributed to the total amount of CO2.__

When your public participates in your work, does that mean that your no longer the author? In Auteurschap in interactie en collectiviteit (my thesis) I tried to answer questions like that and did research on our relevance of our interpretation of an author in an era in which the public can very easily contribute or participate in a piece of art.
Since collective authorship being the subject of my thesis, I asked 18 of my classmates to draw a text box on a blank page with the size of the final book. So the book contains 18 different grids, changing every 8 pages.

Design for Tom Idema's dissertation, made during my internship at Atelier van Wageningen (see http://www.ateliervanwageningen.nl or
http://www.novotypo.nl/expo/Transmutations.html).
Mr. Idema's dissertation provides 'an analysis of contemporary biosciences through the lens of a sub-set of American bio-sf novels (biologically oriented science fiction)'. The cover shows our typographic interpretation of the idea of a 'transmutation' and it contains eight fonts from the Novo and Gagarin family.__

Hoogwater 2012 is a tidal agenda, showing the times of high tide and low tide in Harlingen, The Netherlands. Each hour of the day has a color and the darker the color, the higher the water. At the absolute point of high tide, the line shows the exact water level above NAP (or below NAP at the absolute point of low tide.
Each season also has its own colorrange, according to the watercolor in that season.

Het Destructieve Karakter is a publication of Dick Raaijmaker's 'Het Destructieve Karakter'. The publication is based on the idea of the illusion of balance and how the destructive character tries to break that balance.
Because of the bilingual content, and because I didn't want to make one language more important than the other, the left (and Dutch) part is always black and the right (and English) part is blue. In this way the greyscales of the two parts are of the same intensity.

Custom & Myth is a bundle of essays written by Andrew Lang on savage and traditional myths. The essays all compare savage mythology with the 'higher' myths from Old Greece. I was very interested in this comparison and decided to highlight the difference between the myths by choosing a typeface for the parts of the text about savage myths (sans serif) and a different typeface for the Greek myths (serif).

Untitled #1 This dummy represents my 'fear to be forgotten'; that one day I wake up and my friends and family have forgotten my excistance. The booklet has a Japanese binding with several smaller books inside it. These smaller booklets can't be read and the 'readers' of the outer books don't even notice them, because of the thin material the smaller books are made of and the weird coating of the paper I used for the outer book.

Untitled #2 represents the results I achieved in survival, a sport I'm really into. The colors represent different kind of 'runs' (very color stands for a certain survivalrun), when a color is more often in the book, it means I participated in that run for the amount of times the color appears in the book.

Untitled #3 is about my obsession for maps. The thing that fascinates me most about maps is the way the world is visualized by them and how by folding a map in a certain way, you can create a whole new world. As if you are connecting two parts of the world that where not meant to be directly connected.

200 lyrics is an atlas about the 200 songs I listened most to in 2011 and the 15 keywords that appear the most often in those 200 songs. I analysed the 9 words that appear most in relation to each keyword and the gradation of emotions I feel when I listen to a song containing a certain keyword.
For example; 'down' appears 204 times in the 200 songs, the words that appear most in relation to 'down' are 'me', 'in', 'and', 'bring', 'or', 'keep', 'your', 'on' and 'let' and the emotions I feel most when I listen to songs that contain 'down' are anger and love.

Entropical Emergence is a project about how ecology is starting to become a new religion, almost. The idea of how nature is some kind of perfect harmony in which we play a perfectly balanced role, is an illusion and we have to start accepting that the world as it is now, with all our trash and disasters in it, is the new ecology. The new aesthetic.

Graphic Design: Now In Production is a reproduction of the original Graphic Design Now In Production catalogue. The idea behind this reproduction is the fact that the more images and quotes are uploaded on the internet, the more noise there is starting to appear.
So the more an image is uploaded on the internet, the more it appears in the book.
